Trump calls for new arms pact as landmark treaty expires

US President Donald Trump has called for the negotiation of a “modernized” nuclear arms control treaty between Washington and Moscow, rejecting the extension of the now-expired New START agreement.

Writing on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, the President stated: “The United States is the strongest nation in the world. I completely rebuilt its military during my first term, including new and refurbished nuclear weapons. I also created the Space Force, and I am continuing to rebuild our military at unprecedented levels. We are even adding warships that are a hundred times more powerful than the great ships that roamed the seas during World War II, like the Iowa,Missouri, Alabama, and others.

The President further asserted his role in global stability, adding: “I have prevented nuclear wars from breaking out around the world between Pakistan and India, Iran and Israel, and Russia and Ukraine. Instead of extending the New START Treaty—a poorly negotiated agreement for the US that is being flagrantly violated, among everything else—our nuclear experts should be tasked with working on a new, improved, and modernized treaty that lasts long into the future.Thank you for your interest in this matter! President Donald Trump.

The New START Treaty, which caps the number of deployed nuclear missiles and warheads held by the US and Russia, officially expired on Thursday. Originally signed in 2010 and extended in 2021, the pact served as the final legal mechanism regulating the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals.

The White House did not issue an immediate response to requests for further detail regarding the proposal.
