Egypt, EU hold consultations on multilateral issues

Egypt and the European Union held a round of consultations on multilateral issues, co-chaired by Amr al Sherbiny, Assistant Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs and International Security and Martin Bille Hermann, Managing Director for Multilateral Relations, Human Rights and Democracy and Deputy Political Director at the European External Action Service (EEAS).

The consultations, held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates in the New Capital, addressed a number of issues under discussion within the United Nations and other international organizations and bodies, including efforts and initiatives related to UN reform, Security Council reform and expansion, in addition to disarmament.

The two sides also discussed developments in UN peacekeeping operations and peacebuilding efforts within the organization. Egypt’s role in facilitating the 2025 Review of the UN Peacebuilding Architecture was commended, culminating in the adoption of the twin Security Council and General Assembly resolutions on the review process.

The consultations also covered UNESCO-related issues, with the European side renewing its congratulations to Egypt on the election of Dr. Khaled al-Enany as UNESCO Director-General. Both sides stressed the importance of joint coordination to strengthen UNESCO’s role and enable it to continue carrying out its mission of preserving humanity’s cultural heritage.

The consultations reflected a convergence of views, with both sides reaffirming the central role of the United Nations in the multilateral international system, particularly in maintaining international peace and security and supporting development.

They also emphasized the importance of preserving the intergovernmental nature of the organization, based on the ownership and leadership of member states in all efforts and initiatives.

At the conclusion of the consultations, both sides agreed to hold such meetings on a regular basis and to continue coordinating on multilateral issues.
