Several NATO allies have announced that they will order Patriot air defense missiles for Ukraine directly from the manufacturer in the United States, which comes as Ukraine is facing a shortage of munitions to counter large-scale Russian attacks.
In addition to supporting the NATO-wide program for coordinating donations of advanced US military equipment, four countries – Canada, Denmark, Germany and Norway – announced the initiative to order more missiles directly. Norway said it will provide an additional $307 million (NOK 3 billion) to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense systems.
“Ukraine is managing to stop most drones and cruise missiles, but it needs to strengthen its defence against ballistic missiles. This is one of Ukraine’s most urgent priorities. Norway is therefore now providing NOK 3 billion for air defence,” Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said in the statement. Støre just met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Ankara.
