Aboutrika’s appeal against including him on ‘Terror List’ accepted

The Court of Cassation on Wednesday accepted the appeal by Al-Ahly’s retired football player Mohamed Aboutrika and 1,537 others who were included on the state’s ‘Terrorists List’, with the court ordering their retrial.

Aboutrika has been added to the Egyptian authorities ‘Terrorists’ List’ by a court, based on suspicions that he has provided financing for the now banned Muslim Brotherhood group.

According to AFP, a government committee froze the assets of Aboutrika in 2015, two years after he retired.

The government accused him of financing the Brotherhood, which was classified as a terrorist organization at the end of 2013.

“According to an anti-terror law imposed in 2015 by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, anyone on the country’s terror list is subject to a travel ban, and their passport and assets are liable to be frozen,” AFP reported.

Aboutrika hinted in March that he may return to Egypt from Qatar soon. He posted “Soon” and a flag of Egypt on his Twitter account.

Several other people on retrial from the Terror List include: ex-President Mohamed Morsi and his sons, businessman Safwan Thabet, writer Mostafa Saqr, a number of Muslim Brotherhood leaders like Supreme Guide Mohamed Badei and his sons, Mohamed Mahdy Akef and his sons, Khairat al-Shater and his sons, former MP Saad al-Katatny, Pakinam al-Sharqawy.
