The government is keen to encourage farmers to increase wheat production while maintaining stability in the domestic market, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Khaled Gad said on Sunday, April 12, 2026.
Gad, in statements to the Egyptian television, said raising local wheat procurement prices reflects the state’s commitment to ensuring fair returns for farmers and incentivizing higher production levels.
He explained that the decision to increase procurement prices followed a thorough assessment of production costs, aiming to motivate farmers to supply wheat.
The current season has witnessed an expansion in wheat cultivation areas by approximately 500,000 feddans compared to last year, the spokesman said.
The Agriculture Ministry is targeting the procurement of five million tons during the ongoing harvest season, Gad added.
Despite climate fluctuations, Gad affirmed that crop yields have not been adversely affected, thanks to farmers adhering to the ministry’s agricultural guidelines.
The ministry plans to introduce five new wheat varieties next year, designed to expand cultivation under challenging conditions, including high salinity and extreme temperatures, Gad went on to say.
