Ain Shams University students attacked during protest

Clashes flared Sunday between students from Ain Shams University demanding enhanced security measures on campus and unknown attackers, according to satellite channel Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr.

The protesters were marching from the Abbasseya district to the campus, demanding a private security company to protect the campus and students.

Kareem Galal, who heads the university’s student union, told news website el-Osboa that protesting students are demanding the removal of New Vision, a student association which he accused of perpetrating the violence against students Sunday after one of its members had a quarrel with another student last week. He said the violence caused the Faculty of Arts to cancel Sunday's classes.

The channel quoted the university’s security chief as saying that four students were arrested during the clashes and referred to the university president.

Meanwhile, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported that New Vision students attacked the march of 1,000 students with stones and glass near the Faculty of Science building. Protesters broke into the building to search for the attackers, and some of the building's glass windows and facades were smashed in the process.
