Amr Moussa calls for calm in advance of south Sudan vote

Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa called on all parties in Sudan to refrain from violent acts in the run-up to the southern referendum slated for 9 January.

“The league supports unity between north and south,” he said at a Kuwait conference on Wednesday. “But we’ll respect the will of the people.”

“The referendum must be transparent in order for all parties to respect it,” he added, asserting that dialogue represented the only means of achieving peaceful coexistence in the African continent's largest country.
