Arab League chief to visit Syria on mission to solve crisis

Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Araby announced on Sunday that he intends to visit Syria later this week with the aim of presenting a proposed solution to the crisis in Syria, devised by various Arab foreign ministers during an emergency meeting in August.

At a press conference on Sunday, Araby said that the Syrian envoy to the Arab League, Youssef Ahmed, had notified him that the Syrian government welcomes his visit.

Asked if has had received guarantees from Syria that his visit would not be used by the Syrian regime to buy time, Araby said he does not ask for guarantees when visiting any Arab country, adding that he will speak openly and convey Arab concerns about the situation in Syria.

The Arab League is seeking to persuade Bashar al-Assad’s regime to suspend its bloody suppression of protests that have erupted across the country.

Approximately 2200 people are believed to have been killed by the regime since March.
