Arab League pressures Israel to sign non-proliferation treaty

The Arab League plans to pass a draft decision calling on Israel to join the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty during the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conference to be held in Vienna, Austria in September.

A statement issued by the Arab League council after an urgent meeting of permanent members on Tuesday said the council assigned delegates in Vienna to drum up the required support for the proposal.

The statement also called for intensifying meetings with political powers.

The council has asked Arab foreign ministers and the league's secretary general, along with member countries of the IAEA, to bring the issue up during meetings with foreign policy leaders in their home countries.

It also called on Arab League representatives in Vienna to evaluate the stances of various countries and political groups regarding the proposal.

Israel is presumed to have a sizable nuclear arsenal but neither confirms nor denies this. It is the only Middle East nation that has not signed the non-proliferation treaty.
