Eight militants were killed and nine others were injured in recent army operations in the restive Sinai Peninsula, Egypt’s state TV reported Wednesday, quoting military sources.
The militants were killed in army air strikes on suspected terrorist havens in Sheikh Zuwayed.
The military had raised alert among its forces after claims that terrorist elements had snuck into Egypt via Gaza.
Sinai has seen a series of bloody attacks against police and army forces since the ousting of former president Mohamed Morsy that has left dozens of personnel dead. Most attacks were claimed by Islamist extremist groups.
In late January, Egypt extended a curfew in place since late October by three months when a violent armed attack left approximately 30 army soldiers dead.
