Attorney-General requests govt Daimler-Benz contracts

Attorney-General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud has requested to see all government contracts with European automaker Daimler-Benz in order to verify claims by an American court that the company payed bribes to an Egyptian government official.

Mahmoud said the Council of Ministers had asked both the Foreign Ministry and the Trade Ministry to furnish him with all documents and information relevant to the case.

The US court has ordered the company to pay fines for bribing government officials in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East–including Egypt–between 1998 and 2008.
