Brotherhood member sentenced to 10 years for storming Assiut police station

Assiut Criminal Court on Sunday sentenced Hani Metwally, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, to 10 years in prison and acquitted 28 others, all accused of storming the Abnoub police station in Assiut after the dispersal of the Rabaa al-Adawiya and al-Nahda squares sit-in last August.

Twenty-nine defendants of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Jamaa Islamiya were facing trial, of whom 20 are fugitives.

In its rationale, the court said the accused carried guns and deliberately committed murder, showed force to intimidate citizens, resisted the authorities, and vandalized public and private property in an attempt to disrupt the Constitution. They allegedly shot at police personnel securing the station with the intention to storm it.
