Coptic Church dismisses alleged al-Qaeda threats

The Coptic Church is paying no attention to recent alleged threats by al-Qaeda to target Christians in Egypt, according to church officials.

“God protects the church,” said Holy Synod media spokesman Bishop Morcus. “And we also have confidence in the Egyptian security services.”

Morcus stressed that Coptic Christmas celebrations would not be canceled due to the alleged threats.

The "Iraqi Islamic State" group, said to be affiliated with al-Qaeda, has allegedly renewed earlier threats to target churches in Egypt.

The group claims that Egypt's Coptic Church is detaining the wives of two priests that reportedly converted to Islam. The group had previously threatened to target all Christians in the Middle East if the church did not release the two women.
