Detention extended for young man accused of spying for Israel

Sohag Criminal Court extended on Thursday the detention of a young man, who is accused of spying for Israel, for 45 days.

In March, police apprehended Shenouda Sobhy for exchanging Facebook messages with Israeli nationals in which he allegedly criticized Egypt and said that he was willing to travel to Israel via Sudan.

Police allegedly found a Hebrew dictionary, four fake IDs, two bullets and a card bearing the names of persons belonging to the South Sudanese embassy at Sobhy's home.

The suspect told interrogators he had met with Israeli tourists when he worked as a driver at a resort in Sharm al-Sheikh back in 2011.

Prosecutors said they would press charges against Sobhy, accusing him of espionage.
