Egypt to announce replacement of 14 governors

Egypt will soon announce the replacement of 14 out of 26 regional governors, in addition to the incorporation of two governorates into the Cairo and Giza governorates, said government sources.

The Supreme Council of Armed Forces announced Saturday its intention to replace certain governors who were appointed under ousted President Hosni Mubarak. The decision came one day after hundreds of thousands of Egyptians organized a protest in Tahrir Square demanding the speedy trial of Mubarak and the corrupt icons of his regime as well as the replacement of governors appointed during his reign.

Government sources said on Thursday that Prime Minister Essam Sharaf met with a number of potential candidates to replace the governors. The sources went on to say that during the meetings Sharaf voiced his intention to cancel the separate status of the Helwan and 6th of October governorates and reincorporate them into the Cairo and Giza governorates, respectively.

Sharaf met with candidates from Cairo, Monufiya, Alexandria, Qena, Suez, Assiut, Giza, Sharqiya, Minya, Fayoum, Luxor, Daqahlia, Port Said, Damietta, and Ismailia.
