The Egyptian Ministry of Interior announced on Friday the arrest of several individuals involved in an incident where a men’s intrusion into a designated women’s carriage on the Cairo Metro sparked a widespread social media backlash.
In a statement published on its official Facebook account, the Ministry of Interior noted that “within the framework of uncovering the circumstances surrounding a circulated video clip on social media platforms, which captured an altercation between a man and a woman inside a Cairo Metro carriage designated exclusively for women,” investigations revealed that the individual had boarded the carriage in direct violation of public regulations.
The ministry added that security personnel stationed at the Kobri El-Qobba metro station received a report today from the station’s administrative security—responsible for enforcing carriage occupancy rules—concerning a dispute that broke out between a man and a woman inside the designated women’s carriage over seating priority.
