Egypt to assess Ethiopia’s proposed Nile dam

Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Hussein al-Atfy, in press statements on Thursday, reiterated Egypt will turn a new page in its relations with Ethiopia based on good will, transparency and cooperation in joint development projects, including the Great Millennium Dam that Ethiopia plans to build on the Blue Nile.

The minister also said Egypt has asked Ethiopia to provide information on the dam to assess its effect on the Nile and water allocations for downstream countries before it takes an official stance on the project.

Ethiopian Foreign Minister Hailemariam Desalegn told reporters in Addis Ababa on Thursday that the Ethiopian-Egyptian relations would enter a new phase, with Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf planning to visit the capital soon.
