The Egyptian Presidency has revealed a notable shift in the position of US President Donald Trump regarding Gaza’s residents, following his earlier statements about his intent to displace them from the Strip.
A statement from the Egyptian Presidency on Thursday reported that Trump confirmed the feasibility of implementing a plan for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip without displacing its residents. This came during a meeting with leaders of Arab and Islamic nations in New York last Monday, which was attended by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, representing President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.
The Presidency statement quoted Madbouly as saying that President Trump affirmed his rejection of the continuation of the war in Gaza and the United States’ determination to end it. Trump reportedly asserted that the US had established a clear roadmap for an immediate ceasefire. Furthermore, President Trump confirmed the possibility of implementing a reconstruction plan for the Strip without the displacement of its people.
The statement indicated that President El-Sisi welcomed Trump’s initiative to stop the war in Gaza, expressing his eagerness for its implementation as soon as possible. He also stressed the importance of intensifying coordination with the international community to increase humanitarian aid directed toward the Strip.
Sisi renewed Egypt’s firm rejection of the displacement of Palestinians or the annexation of parts of the West Bankto Israeli sovereignty.
Trump had stated on more than one occasion that he sought to displace the Gaza Strip’s population, seize the territory, and turn it into the “Middle East’s Riviera” .
