The Egyptian Water Regulatory Agency (EWRA) in cooperation with the Electricity Utility and Consumer Protection Regulatory Agency, launched an awareness initiative to urge citizens to rationalize the consumption of water and electricity.
The Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities Assem al-Gazzar said that the initiative targets different age groups and includes important instructions on how best to rationalize the consumption of water and electricity.
The initiative was launched under the slogan “Your interest matters to us” on social media, and comes to implement a cooperation protocol concluded between the two agencies.
The Deputy Minister of Housing for Infrastructure Affairs, Sayed Ismail, indicated that the initiative provides advice to citizens on how to deal with some household appliances, in order to rationalize the consumption of water and electricity.
He added that the initiative aims to educate citizens about the importance of expanding the installation of prepaid meters, which is one of the steps taken by the government to reduce the burden on citizens, ensure accountability for consumption and reduce waste.
For his part, the head of the Electricity Utility and Consumer Protection Regulatory Agency Mohamed Moussa Omran said that the protocol includes a number of areas of cooperation, including consumer protection, through evaluating the performance of service providers, and studying and examining consumer complaints.
Egypt’s need to rationalize electricity
Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker, said earlier in August that his ministry is preparing to hold an international press conference to announce a plan to rationalize electricity consumption in all economic sectors.
Earlier in August, the cabinet approved a draft decision to take some measures to implement the state’s plan to rationalize electricity consumption, which aims to achieve savings in the quantities of natural gas used in operating power stations for the purpose of exporting and benefiting from hard currency.
The draft resolution stipulates the commitment of the state’s administrative apparatus, including ministries, government agencies and departments, public bodies and public sector companies, to rationalize electrical consumption in all buildings and facilities affiliated with them throughout official working hours and to commit to a complete shutdown of internal and external lighting after the workday.
