Egypt strikes deal with Chinese company to produce electric cars

Egypt’s Minister of the Public Business Sector Hisham Tawfiq on Thursday witnessed the signing via video conference of a memorandum of understanding between the El Nasr Automotive Company and the Chinese company Dongfeng Motor to produce electric cars at El Nasr factories in Egypt.

El Nasr, which is affiliated with the Ministry’s Metallurgical Industries Company, is expected to have an annual production capacity of 25,000 cars.

Tawfiq welcomed the cooperative venture with the Chinese company, adding that the project will be a breakthrough for the electric car industry in Egypt and an introduction of this technology into North Africa.

He also said that the deal comes within the framework of a plan to revive El Nasr‘s business, which has been suspended since the company was liquidated in 2009.
