Egypt welcomed on Sunday an agreement signed between the President of South Sudan Salva Kiir and his former deputy Riek Machar last Friday evening in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
Egypt hoped the agreement would staunch the blood of "brothers of the people of South Sudan" and "inaugurate a new phase of consensus where South Sudan could reap the fruits of desired peace and stability since achieving independence."
Cairo appealed, according to a Foreign Ministry statement, to all regional and international parties to help South Sudan implement the ceasefire agreement and provide a supportive climate to restore stability as soon as possible.
The statement added that Egypt is committed to supporting South Sudan in achieving the aspirations of its people and their humanitarian and development needs.
Egypt will take part in the International Donors' Conference for South Sudan which will be held in the Norwegian capital Oslo on 20 May and will announce aid and development programs to South Sudan, the statement mentioned.
President Salva Kiir and rebel commander Riek Machar signed the deal on Friday after growing international pressure to end the ethnic fighting that has raised fears of genocide. The conflict has killed thousands of people and driven about a million from their homes, with many fleeing into neighboring states.
