Egyptian death toll in Libyan unrest rises to 12

The number of Egyptians killed during the ongoing unrest in Libya has increased to 12, the Egyptian government announced Tuesday night.

The corpses of 12 Egyptians killed in the unrest have arrived home, Health Minister Ashraf Hatem told reporters in a press statement.

The number of injured who have arrived to Egypt has reached 74, a number which includes 72 Egyptians, a Bengalese, and a Palestinian, according to Hatem. Seventeen of the victims are in critical condition.

The minister added that 35 of the arrivals have already left Egypt after receiving treatment, while the rest are hosted at Alexandria University's hospitals, Asharq al-Awsat Hospital,  al-Saraya Hospital in Alexandria, the Salloum Hospital and the Public Hospital in the area of Matrouh.

With around 1.5 million people working in the country, Egyptians constitute the largest foreign community in Libya.

Libya has seen continuous protests since 17 February calling for the ouster of Colonel Muammar Qadhafi's regime.

It is believed that several thousand Libyans have been killed in clashes with the army, police and Qadhafi's private militias.
