Egypt’s Grand Mufti Shawqi Allam in an interview with the privately-owned satellite channel “Sada al-Balad” on Saturday said that not finding archaeological traces of the prophets does not mean that they did not exist.
The Grand Mufti stressed that those who believe in the Quran and Sunnah believe in everything they bring about, including the stories and events that happened with the prophets, in addition to believing in the unseen.
This comes weeks after statements by Egyptologist and former Minister of Antiquities Zahi Hawass on the “al-Hekaya” (The Story) program, in which he said that there is no archaeological evidence from ancient Egyptian civilization regarding the existence of the prophets Abraham, Moses, and Joseph.
Hawass said: “I am a Muslim and I believe in what was stated in the Holy Quran and the heavenly books regarding the entry of our Moses, Abraham and Joseph into Egypt and the exodus took place in Egypt, but I say that in the Egyptian antiquities there is no mention of the prophets of God.”
Egyptologist Wassim al-Sisi backed Hawass’s claims, stating that “History and science have not proven that God spoke to Moses in Sinai.”
