Eighth police officer dies of injuries from Thursday blast in Haram

A police officer working for the National Security Agency died on Saturday of wounds sustained during an explosion at a residential apartment in Haram street, Giza, last Thursday. His death raises the toll to eight police agents and three civilians.

Investigators have revealed that at least seven remotely-controlled IEDs exploded when security forces raided the apartment after following up on a tip that suspects had been manufacturing explosives inside. Two people have been arrested for their suspected involvement in the incident.

Though Egypt’s Islamic State affiliates claimed responsibility for the operation, another group, the Revolutionary Punishment, also said it was behind it, causing confusion over who the real perpetrators were. While IS affiliates claimed responsibility for a majority of attacks targeting security forces since 2013, mostly in the Sinai Peninsula, the Revolutionary Punishment has claimed attacks across provinces outside of Sinai.
