ElBaradei: Morsy failed to manage political process

Mohamed ElBaradei, vice president for international relations, said he is not currently communicating with the Muslim Brotherhood, and emphasized that ousted President Mohamed Morsy "failed to manage the political process."

ElBaradei also renewed calls for ending violence and intimidation of citizens via legal and political means.

At a press conference he held with Catherine Ashton, European Union foreign policy chief, on Tuesday, ElBaradei said, "There are several initiatives, including talks with Ashton," adding that there is a need to stop the violence and form independent investigation committees to probe the recent violent clashes in which dozens of Pro-Morsy protesters were killed.

"Violence is not a solution. It only deepens problems. The continuation of violence and intimidation of citizens will lead to the deaths of more people, which is the last thing we, Egyptians, want to see," ElBaradei said.

"Ousted President Mohamed Morsy failed to manage the political process and he has to realise that we are living in a new stage after the [30 June] uprising which corrected the path of the 25 January [2011] revolution. In addition, there is a new roadmap and we need to end the state of polarisation peacefully."

ElBaradei also said that he hopes the Muslim Brotherhood and its political party will be part of the political process in the coming stage.

ElBaradei said he had not had any communication with the Brotherhood in the meantime, adding however, that he might get in touch with the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party in the future.

Regarding the possible breakup of pro-Morsy protests in Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda squares, ElBaradei said that political solutions should take priority over security solutions.

"I hope no violence will occur in breaking the sit-ins, which should be handled in conformance to the law. We are now trying to build a new post-Mubarak state based on the rule of law, social justice, dignity, and freedom."

Elbaradei expressed hopes that the investigative committee that will be formed to probe recent violence will be independent and start work immediately.
