Environment Minister: Regulations for the use of coal are necessary to prevent harmful effects on the environment

Environment Minister Khaled Fahmy said that limited sources of energy and shortages of fuel have made it imperative to search for alternative and unconventional sources. “We are studying the environmental impact of using coal as an alternative energy souce,” he said at a conference entitled “The Safe Use of Coal as Alternative Energy and its Role in Supporting the Egyptian Economy.”

He said that over the last nine months he has drafted regulations and environmental standards for the use of coal, starting with the types of coal, its burning and its emissions.

The standards were drafted in cooperation with the Ministries of Transport, Health and Interior, as well the Civil Associations Union.

“The regulations were sent in January to the Justice Ministry,” he said. “We are now waiting for the law to be amended to ensure a safe use of coal.”
