Essam al-Erian: The US fails to live up to values of freedom and democracy

Vice President of the Freedom and Justice Party Essam al-Erian accused the US on Tuesday of undermining democratic values and causing a universal financial and economic catastrophe.

On his Facebook page, Erian said, “The US always supports the most gruesome occupation on earth, which practices racism against the unarmed Palestinian people. Congress leaders race to satisfy the Zionists, paying no heed to a nation against which the entire world has colluded and which suffers from oppression from sisterly nations due to the pressure the US applies on its Arab allies.”

The US, Erian wrote, has undermined all the values that it claims to support and represent, such as freedom, democracy, justice, the rule of law and human rights.

The trillions of dollars spent on wars have caused a universal financial and economic catastrophe, he continued, while this money could have achieved development and justice for all Arabs and Muslims, and stopped the wave of migration that exported violence to Europe.

“The US has failed to build any democratic regime that respects the values and rules of democracy in any place it has occupied or with whose leaders it has allied,” he declared.

The US has said on more than one occasion that it supports the democratic transformation in Egypt after the 25 January revolution, which rose up against the rule of former President Hosni Mubarak, who was one of the closest US allies and that it now supports the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood to power, he said.

Earlier in March, US Secretary of State John Kerry sought to persuade the opposition to engage in dialogue with President Morsy.

Meanwhile, some members of the US Congress have raised concerns about US aid to Egypt after the rise of the Brotherhood, with doubts about respect for human rights in today’s Egypt, and concerned about the security of Israel.
