EU calls for minority representation in constituent assembly

The European Union discussed the latest developments in Egypt on Monday, after the European Parliament held a brief discussion about the same topic.

EU foreign ministers issued a statement while meeting in Brussels calling on the transitional authorities in Egypt to ensure the representation of minorities in the constituent assembly that will draft the new constitution.

The statement also called for the new constitution to protect human rights, fundamental freedoms and women’s rights.

The EU called for a handover of power to a civilian authority as soon as possible, expressing deep concern over restrictions imposed on civil society organizations in Egypt.

Although it respects the independence of the judicial system in Egypt, the EU said it intends to monitor the ongoing legal proceedings against the NGO staff who are being tried for allegedly receiving illegal foreign funding.

The EU also reiterated the crucial role of civil society organizations in the transitional period, and its support for them as they are pillars of the European Neighborhood Policy, which includes mutual accountability and a shared commitment to universal values of human rights and democracy, the rule of law and fundamental freedoms.

It expressed deep concern over the economic decline in Egypt, and emphasized its continued support, stressing that Egypt must engage in social and economic reforms and effectively use international assistance.
