European Parliament to vote on resolution condemning Egypt rights violations

The European Parliament plans to vote Thursday on a draft resolution calling on Egyptian authorities to release all political detainees facing military trials, reported Al-Shorouk's website Thursday.

The draft resolution also condemns the Egyptian government's violations of human rights and democracy, said the newspaper, which reported it had obtained a copy of the draft resolution.

The draft resolution calls for the immediate release of detained activist Alaa Abd El Fattah and all other civilians facing military trials, saying that such trials violate human rights.

Al-Shorouk reported that the draft resolution reiterates deep concern for detained blogger Maikel Nabil and calls upon Egyptian authorities to ensure that civilians, journalists and political activists are not subjected to direct or indirect harassment, intimidation or restrictions of their right to free speech.

European Parliament Member Marity Shack, who has called for an independent, comprehensive and transparent investigation into the Maspero massacre of 28 people, prepared the draft resolution.

Egyptian rights organizations issued a statement in July saying that some civilians who have been sentenced to prison by military courts were harassed and severely beaten in the New Valley prison in southern Egypt.

The rights organizations held the Interior Ministry fully responsible prisoner safety and stressed the need to purge the ministry of corrupt members.

Rights activists say police assaults on detained activists and other prisoners have occurred both before and after the revolution.

Al-Nadeem Center for Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence has revealed several cases of torture at police stations over the past few months.
