Family of detained journalist arranges solidarity Iftar

The family of Mohamed al-Battawy, a reporter of the state-run Akhbar Al-Youm, who had been arrested over suspected affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood, is organizing an Iftar on Wednesday as a symbolic token of solidarity with the detainee.

The family said the Iftar will be held outside the Journalists Syndicate, in order to protest against the arrest of their son a week ago.

Press freedom advocates have decried what they see as a crackdown on journalists since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Also, several international reports have shown Egypt's decline in press freedom over the past few years.

In 2014, Egypt ranked 6th among the 10 worst jailers of journalists in 2014, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
