Fire breaks out at Cairo metro station

A massive fire broke out at a Cairo metro station early this morning, causing services to be halted at four stations, security sources said.

Two stations were operating normally three hours after the incident but all operations at the other two are still, sources added.

The fire started at 7:50 AM this morning when high voltage cables caught fire at the al-Marg power station which feeds the first al-Marg to Helwan line, according to security sources.

The fire stopped all metro traffic between the stations of al-Marg al-Gedida, al-Marg, Ezbet al-Nakhl, and Ain Shams for three hours, which led to severe overcrowding at these stations.

Ezbet al-Nakhl and Ain Shams stations are still closed, while those of al-Marg and al-Marg al-Gedida are now operational.

Eye witnesses have said that fire engines did not arrive at the scene until 9:15 AM, even though a civil defense unit is located only 10 minutes away from the site of the fire.
