Five governorates seized by protests

Within the last two days, protests have erupted in six different governorates of Egypt.

In Gharbiya, more than 600 workers from the Tanta Flax Company staged demonstrations on Wednesday to demand disbursement of their early retirement pensions. They condemned the company’s Saudi owner and threatened to stage a sit-in before the parliament building in Cairo next Saturday if their demands were not met.

In Fayoum, 40 taxi drivers demonstrated before provincial authority headquarters to protest the confiscation of their vehicles and suspension of their diver’s licenses for violating safety and maintenance standards.

In Menoufiya, roughly 200 residents of the village of Meselha blocked a nearby highway, demanding that authorities place speed bumps on the roadway after one villager died after being hit by a speeding car.

In Suez, employees of the Suez shipyard protested against a recent decision by authorities to close the facility, which, they fear, will result in the loss of their jobs.

In Minya, meanwhile, students at Minya University’s faculty of medicine protested against a decision by university administrators to shorten the deadline for final exams.
