FM: Ashton believes former Egypt regime did not live up to Egyptians’ ambitions

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has said that European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton believes that the regime of ousted President Mohamed Morsy did not fulfill the aspirations of Egyptians.

A statement issued by the ministry on Monday after a meeting between Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy and Ashton, who arrived in Egypt for a visit on Sunday, said Ashton called on all parties to exercise self-control and avoid incitement of violence. She also emphasized the need for all parties to take part in the democratic process.

This is Ashton’s second visit to Egypt in less than two weeks. Ashton is currently in a meeting with Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, according to European diplomatic sources.

The statement also said that Fahmy briefed Ashton on the developments in Egypt and the need for national reconciliation and the participation of all parties in the democratic process to implement the roadmap announced by the army on 3 July. He also highlighted the importance of rejecting violence.

Ashton is scheduled to meet with Mohamed ElBaradei, vice president for international relationsو to brief him on the outcome of her talks on Monday, according to a statement issued by ElBaradei’s office.

Ashton will also meet with representatives from the Muslim Brotherhood later on Monday.
