Foreign Ministry Spokesperson: Downgrade in Turkish relations was an Egyptian decision

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Badr Abdel Aaty said the decision to reduce diplomatic representation is a pure Egyptian one, however, ties with Turkey are not severed but ongoing diplomatically and economically.

Abdel Aaty also added that Turkish decision on expelling the Egyptian ambassador was inevitable, adding that he has been in Egypt since mid-August.

In a phone call with the privately-owned CBC channel, Abdel Aaty said, “Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan made statements to Russian website, that were not translated in news of Anadolu agency. He described what happened in Egypt as ‘coup’ and that he does not respect whoever brings deposed President Mohamed Morsy to trial. He also described those who died in Rabaa al-Adaweya as martyrs.”
