French group offers Egypt nuke know-how

A consortium of French companies specialized in the construction and management of nuclear power stations has offered to help Egypt develop its own nuclear program.

The French Areva conglomerate claims to have extensive expertise regarding nuclear fuel cycles, operational procedures and plant safety mechanisms developed during its previous work building and managing French nuclear plants.

The French Cultural Center in Cairo is expected to host a meeting soon between consortium representatives and Egyptian government officials from the Nuclear Power Plants Authority and the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.

An official source noted that Areva has long endeavored to play a role in building Egypt’s first nuclear power plant.

Egypt has recently stepped up efforts to obtain permission from the International Atomic Energy Agency to build its first nuclear power plant. Authorities have announced tentative plans to build the plant in the Dabaa region on Egypt’s North Coast.
