Ganzouri enters downtown office for first time since Nov appointment

Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri entered his office Tuesday for the first time since his appointment in November, ending a 54-day stand-off with protesters opposed to his appointment who had blocked the entrance to the building.

Ganzouri arrived at 10 am to his office on People’s Assembly Street in downtown Cairo.

The prime minister’s convoy entered through the main gate. Ganzouri greeted cabinet employees, then headed to his office to review the statement he was scheduled to deliver at the People’s Assembly later in the day.

Revolutionary groups reject the appointment of Ganzouri, who succeeded former Prime Minister Essam Sharaf. They say he is a figure from the former Mubarak regime.

Ganzouri held his ministerial meetings first at the Planning and International Cooperation Ministry and then at the General Authority for Investment.

Protesters had staged a sit-in outside the cabinet building for weeks before military forces violently dispersed them on 16 December. At least 17 people were killed in the clashes.
