Govt considers changing name of Mubarak metro station

The Transport Ministry is in the process of changing the name of the Mubarak metro station following a new ruling issued on Thursday ordering the removal of former President Hosni Mubarak’s name from all public places. Alternative names being considered include “25 January” and “The Martyrs”.

The new ruling orders the removal of the names of both Mubarak and his wife Suzanne from all squares, streets and institutions across the nation.

An official source from the Egyptian Company for Metro Management and Operation (ECMMO) said that Transport Minister Atef Abdel Hamid is scheduled to hold a meeting with the ECMMO board to select an appropriate name for the station. The source said that the most likely choice will be “25 January”.

Abdel Hamid said that the new name will be decided on by a committee, specially formed for the task.

A number of Egyptian revolutionaries recently called for the station to be renamed “The Martyrs” to commemorate those killed during the 25 January revolution.
