Govt report rejects military council’s accusations against revolutionary groups

A government report published on Tuesday rejects accusations made by Egypt's ruling military council against revolutionary groups.

The fact-finding report on Saturday's clashes in Abbasseya, Cairo, the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) orders immediate investigations to determine who was responsible for the violence, as well as similar incidents in Cairo, Alexandria and Suez.

The clashes in Abbasseya took place between protesters heading to the Defense Ministry and groups of civilians carrying weapons, who some suspect of being hired thugs. The clashes led to the injury of 300 people.

The report also criticizes the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) for making unsupported accusations against some political movements.

In a statement before the protest, the SCAF had accused some groups, particularly the April 6 Youth Movement, of attempting to cause divisions between the people and the military in order to destabilize Egypt.

The NCHR report rejects the military council's accusations, saying that no evidence has been presented to support them.

The council also called on the Egyptian authorities to safeguard the right to protest and collective expression of opinion, as long as this is done in a peaceful manner.

The NCHR report also said it had received testimonies, supported with photographs and video, that certain civilian groups were waiting for the protesters hast hey headed to Abbasseya Square.
