Grand Museum receives 27 wooden pieces from second sun boat

The Grand Egyptian Museum received Monday 27 wooden pieces from the second Khufu sun boat after they were restored and documented on location.

Restoration Director Eissa Zeidan said the Egyptian-Japanese team managed to extract the oars in addition to 586 wooden pieces from the boat’s cache and restored 500 of them.

“We decompress them to adapt to the outside temperature and humidity, restore them on location, package them in special boxes and transport them to the Grand Museum,” Zeidan explained.

The restoration of the second Khufu sun boat is a joint project between the Antiquities Ministry and the Japanese Waseda University that started in 2009.
