High-income earners to be excluded from ration-card program

The Ministry of Social Solidarity has decided to exclude citizens earning monthly salaries of more than LE1000 from using the government's ration-card program.

The move is aimed at ensuring that cards are given only to those most in need of them.

According to one government source, however, those earning more than LE1000 per month will still be eligible to receive coupons with which to buy butane gas cylinders at subsidized prices.

The same source also pointed out that the next generation of ration cards would be electronic.
