IAEA inspectors toured Egypt nuke facilities

Official sources at the Ministry of Electricity and Energy have revealed that a team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has completed routine inspections late last month at seven plants in Belbeis, east of Cairo.

Sources said the five-day tour saw visits to the Anshas reactor and the Nuclear Research Center (NRC), among other facilities. Observers did not voice any concerns about Egypt’s peaceful activities that serve mostly medicine, agriculture and scientific research. This visit was the second in the past year. The UN nuclear watchdog’s program involves dispatching inspection teams twice a year.

Sources affirmed that Egypt maintains a clean record as far as the IAEA is concerned, adding that the agency has accepted Egypt’s answers to its past queries.

The sources also revealed that a delegation from Rosatom, the Russian nuclear regulatory body, will soon arrive in Egypt with two funding offers for the renovation of the old Anshas plant, which would raise its capacity from two to five megawatts.
