Israeli defense official arrives in Cairo after Hamas-Fatah meeting

An Israeli Defense Ministry official arrived in Cairo on Sunday for talks with Egyptian officials on several political and security issues, Israeli radio has said.

Amos Gilad, director of policy and political-military affairs, will meet with officials to tackle the issue of captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, developments in Gaza and the security situation on the Egyptian-Israeli border.

Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah also met in Cairo on Sunday in an effort to end divisions and implement the reconciliation agreement they signed earlier this year, also in Cairo.

Hamas captured Shalit five years ago. An Israeli lobby has been pressuring the Israeli government to sign an agreement to exchange prisoners with Hamas so Shalit will be released.
