Italy deports 54 Egyptians, including illegal immigrants

Fifty-four Egyptians arrived in Cairo Airport on Monday after being deported by Italian authorities in Rome.

They were arrested a few weeks ago for violating residency conditions, said security officials in the airport.

Italian authorities arrested 17 of the deportees after protests by Egyptian workers, the sources said. Some had lived in Italy for eight years.

The other 37 deportees were arrested on a boat while trying to enter Italy, they said.

The deportees arrived on two planes, which were secured by guards upon arrival.
