Jama’a Islamiya calls for vigil before US Embassy to release leader

Jama’a Islamiya requested the United States to release its spiritual leader, Omar Abdel Rahman, who has been in a US prison for 15 years. It called for a peaceful vigil before the US Embassy for this purpose.

The group also called on Foreign Minister Nabil al-Arabi and Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb to intervene in the matter.

At a conference in Fayoum on Sunday, the group presented a message from Abdel Rahman purporting to show that he is detained in solitary confinement and monitored with cameras 24 hours a day, and that he is prohibited from praying or even contacting his children.
