Katatny: Supplementary constitutional declaration steps on Parliament’s toes

People’s Assembly Speaker Saad al-Katatny on Tuesday warned the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces against issuing a supplement to the Constitutional Declaration or an amendment to Article 60 of the Constitutional Declaration.

Katany said such an action would represent an assault on the constitutionally granted powers of the People’s Assembly.

During Tuesday morning’s parliamentary session, Katatny said, “Since 23 January, the Egyptian people recovered full legislative authority through this Parliament and no one can overstep this authority by issuing decrees or constitutional declarations.”

Katatny went on to say that Parliament will not tolerate such an action and will not give up its rights. He added that until now he was unaware of the SCAF's intention to issue a supplement to the Constitutional Declaration.

MP Mamdouh Ismail issued an urgent statement in which he warned that the SCAF was preparing to issue the supplement, saying that this represents an encroachment on Parliament’s legislative authority.
