Legal action taken against Hurghada resort over coral reef destruction

The Red Sea Nature Reserves director Ahmed Ghallab asked the reserves legal affairs department to take legal action against a resort in Makadi bay, south Hurghada, for committing environmental violations.

The village hired a huge excavator to mend a water desalination line, which broke a large part of the coral reef, Ghallab added.

An emergency committee from the reserves' authority was dispatched to inspect the area of the incident and estimate the size of the damages, he said.

The resort violated the permit it obtained from the Environmental Affairs Authority for excavation work, Ghallab stressed.

He said that a claim had been filed with the incident.
