Man detained over alleged pro-Israel espionage

State prosecutors have detained a man suspected of involvement in alleged acts of espionage for Israel for 15 days pending investigation, state-run MENA news agency reported Saturday.

Security forces arrested the defendant, referring him to the State Security Prosecution on charges of spying for a foreign country.

Prosecutors claimed after preliminary investigations that the suspect had cooperated with Israel's secret service, Mossad, after being co-opted and working for the agency since 2011.

The suspect reportedly filed a "false" report with Egypt's security services detailing Mossad's recruiting attempts after realising the extent of his or her involvement with Israeli intelligence.

The suspect was trying to absolve themselves from arrest, prosecutors said.

According to investigators, the suspect then continued contact with Mossad despite being told by Egyptian security services to cut off all communications with immediate effect.

The Egyptian General Intelligence Service had been monitoring the defendant's alleged clandestine activities for 2 years.

Evidence collected over that period has since been handed over to prosecutors.

The suspect was arrested at his workplace.

The prosecution said the defendant has admitted to spying for Israel. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the specifics of sensitive information passed on to Israel's intelligence servies.
