Mariotteya canal bus crash: five victims from one family

Saber, a seventy-year-old man from Ezbet Khairallah, lost five of his family members, when a bus carrying Orascom construction workers to 6th of October City fell into the Marriotteya canal.

He rushed into the Haram hospital, expecting to find his family among the injured. However, as he went into the room, he was told that his relatives had died.

As he went into the morgue, crying and leaning on one of the hospital visitors, he found three bodies. Only later would he find out that two more of his siblings, including his youngest brother Hany, were also killed in the accident.

“This morning, my brother Hany kissed my hand before going to work as if I were his father, not his elder brother. I wished him success,” he said, crying. "We pray to God that our victims be considered as martyrs,” he added.

Hosny, also from Saber's family, refused to accept the LE10,000 compensation from the Giza governor, who visited the hospital to reassure the citizens and answer to their demands.

Hosny added that they were waiting for the autopsy results and for the investiigations to be concluded, to decide if there was any negligence by officials.

12 people were killed, and 15 were injured in the accident that took place on Saturday.
