Military bolsters police force with additional conscripts

Interior Minister Mansour al-Essawy said the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces has agreed to reserve 50,000 conscripts for the Ministry of Interior to help offset the prevailing security shortage.

“There are 290,000 conscripts reserved for the ministry,” Essawy explained. “I asked for even more, but the council agreed to 50,000 only.”

“We received 200 new patrol cars that will help in this situation,” he added. “We aim to bring back order to the streets.”

Essawy also discussed the security of courtrooms in a meeting with Ahmed al-Zind, president of Egypt’s Judges Club.

Sources said the minister met with Zind when judges threatened to strike due to assaults on them inside courtrooms.
