Military court issues jail terms for 35 accused of ‘thuggery’

Egypt’s Supreme Military Court on Sunday issued jail sentences against 35 Egyptians charged with thuggery, robbery, violation of curfew and intimidation of citizens.

The sentences ranged between two and seven years in prison. Charges included attempted vandalism, deliberate destruction of property, intimidation of citizens, sowing chaos, stealing, weapons possession, and resisting arrest.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the armed forces said that legal action was also currently being taken against nine other people accused of "infiltrating" anti-government demonstrations in Tahrir Square on 25 February with the aim of creating discord between demonstrators and members of the armed forces.
